{"id":404,"date":"2016-08-24T12:33:27","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T17:33:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pack200cumc.com\/?page_id=404"},"modified":"2016-10-26T08:34:08","modified_gmt":"2016-10-26T13:34:08","slug":"flag-retirement-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/pack200cumc.com\/?page_id=404","title":{"rendered":"Flag Retirement Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Background<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gpo.gov\/fdsys\/pkg\/USCODE-2011-title4\/html\/USCODE-2011-title4-chap1.htm\">Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8(k)<\/a> of the US Code contains the rules for retiring a flag: &#8220;The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">However, modern nylon flags produce hazardous fumes when burning. \u00a0Instead the flag can be cut as shown below\u00a0and then disposed of.<\/p>\n<h3>Retirement Ceremony<\/h3>\n<p>How to cut the flag for retirement:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/usscouts.org\/images\/oldglory.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/usscouts.org\/images\/oldglory.gif\" alt=\"image from: http:\/\/usscouts.org\/images\/oldglory.gif\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from: http:\/\/usscouts.org\/images\/oldglory.gif<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Following ceremony is slightly adapted from:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/usscouts.org\/ceremony\/flagret1.asp\">http:\/\/usscouts.org\/ceremony\/flagret1.asp<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Adult Leader: The U.S. flag is more than just some brightly colored cloth.. it is a symbol of our nation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #1: Seven red stripes and six white strips; together they represent the original 13 colonies that gained us liberty.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #2: The red stripes remind us of the lifeblood of brave men and women who were ready to die for this, their country.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #3: The white stripes remind us of purity and cleanliness of purpose, thought, word and deed.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #4: The blue is for truth and justice, like the eternal blue of the star-filled heavens.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #5: The stars represent the fifty sovereign states of our union.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Adult Leader or SPL: The U.S. flag should be treated with respect when it&#8217;s flying, and it should be treated with respect when it&#8217;s being retired.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #6: The American Creed states, &#8220;it is my duty to my country to love it, to respect its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #7: Therefore, we retire flags with dignity and respect when they become worn, torn, faded, or badly soiled.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>[optional, if known] Adult Leader or SPL: This flag is ready to be retired. Its history is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>First Raised (when):<br \/>\nAt (location):<br \/>\nMemorable event or fact:<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Scout #8: A flag ceases to be a flag when it is cut into pieces. We cut the flag into four pieces: three red and white striped banners and the blue star field. We leave the blue field intact because no one should ever let the union be broken.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>For a cotton flag<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Adult Leader or SPL: As the parts of the flag are placed in the fire remember.. Old Flags never die, they just get fired up!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Scouts will maintain a vigil over the fire until no traces of the flag remnants remain. Then the ashes will be collected and buried. \u00a0This concludes this ceremony.
